Why was pablo mastroeni of USA, sent off with a red card during the 71st minute?

right before that play was maurice edu's foul and walked away with the yellow, then the reff came back to him near the 18 and gave pablo a red. for what??!?!?!?!? it ruined the whole ending of the game.
